How do I get to Benbecula? You can fly to Benbecula with Flybe from Belfast, Barra, Birmingham, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Exeter, Glasgow, Guernsey, Inverness, Isle of Man, Jersey, Kirkwall, London (Gatwick), Manchester, Norwich, Southampton, Sumburgh and Stornoway. Most of these flights are via Glasgow or Stornoway. There is no direct ferry to Benbecula. The nearest is the Caledonian Macbrayne Car Ferry from Uig on Skye that lands at Lochmaddy on North UIst. There is also the Caledonian Macbrayne Car Ferry from Oban on the mainland, that calls at Lochboisdale on South UIst. From both of these destinations it is about 45 minutes to Benbecula by car. Also, there are Caledonian Macbrayne Car Ferry services from the islands of Berneray (linked by causeway to North Uist) and Eriskay (linked to South Uist) that connect to the other Outer Hebridean islands of Harris and Barra.
How do I get around Benbecula? The postbus travels to and from the airport and calls at Creagorry, Torlum, Griminish Surgery and Balivanich. Also, there is a Bus service between Gramsdale, Uachdar, Balivanich, Benbecula Airport, U&B Hospital, Griminish Surgery, Torlum, Lionacleit School and Creagorry. Taxi’s are available from Benbecula Taxi Service. Car hire is available from Maclennan’s Self-Drive in Balivanich and from Ask Car Hire in Liniclate. What’s worth visiting on Benbecula? Nunton Steadings is an 18th century Farm Steadings that have been recently renovated to incorporate a a Museum, Art Gallery, Cafe and a Gift Shop. Borve Castle was founded by the Macdonalds of Clanranald and was their principal stronghold. There is now only the remains of the Keep.
Where can I stay in Benbecula? There are two hotels on Benbecula. Isle of Benbecula Hotels are available through Holidays Combined. They are the Dark Island Hotel in Liniclate and The Isle of Benbecula Hotel in Creagorry. There are also Guest Houses such as Kyles Flodda Bed and Breakfast in Flodda, Ceann na Pairc Guest House in Balivanich, Lionacleit Guest House in Liniclate and Borve Guest House in Torlum. There is also Shellbay Caravan & Camping Park in Liniclate and there is Taigh na Cille Bunkhouse in Balivanich.
